Hystory
Campulung city is famous, among other things, for the fact that here was the oldest written document written in Romanian - letter of Neacsu of Campulung to Hans Benkner, judge of Brasov. This letter provided information about the layout and movements of Turkish troops in this part of the country.

The first documentary mention dates from 1300 (other sources mention the year 1292), Campulung being the oldest city in the Romanian Country. By the seventeenth century lived here a significant Saxon community. Human presence in this area is much older. The oldest traces of material culture, found both on the area of the town and its surroundings, dates from the late Bronze period (1700-1600 BC). Thus, to Pescareasa, in the southern city, was discovered a cemetery, proof of existence of human settlements. Traces of Geto-Dacian habitation, of II-I centuries BC, are well outlined in the current city area, neighborhood Olari-Saint Gheorghe, and so those of Apa Sarata and Bughea de Sus, which belong to late Dacian culture.

Geography

The topography of this area consists of: mountains, hills and piedmont plateaus. The city is located amid a natural depression, depression Campulung, at the foot of the Musceleni Carpathians. In the northern basin Campulung, between Raul Doamnei and the Dambovita River, rises Iezer massif, distinct relief unit. Connection between the ridge of Fagaras and Iezer massif is the lower peak Mezea - Otic.

From the massif extend to S and S - E more smooth peaks: Plaiul lui Patru, Plaiul Iezerului Mare, Plaiul Vacarea and prolong peak Danciu-Portareasa - Zanoaga. The other mountains bordering the depression Campulung are: Papusa, Leaota and Piatra Craiului.
Existence in this area of the couloir Rucar - Bran, opened between the massifs Piatra Craiului and Leaota, greatly influenced its economic development of Campulung Muscel and its surroundings. The town developed along the River Valley Targului, but also on higher terraces of the depression.
